The power of Anchoring

We all know these days, especially now with the festive season coming up, that you can't get any work done? or that you know that you want to go for that early morning run and then realize the weather conditions are not in your favor?

These days can be gone for good in a matter of minutes.

Now I can hear you think and say that it's not possible. As the saying goes " Nothing is impossible", with a special technique that we use in NLP you can change your state immediately.

Later in this blog we will come back in detail on how this works and how Anchoring will benefit you.

My first time trying Anchoring.

First let me tell you a little story.

One of my colleagues, who usually is in a good mood by nature, had some troubles at some points with waking up and being full of energy as he usually did.

When I noticed after observing him for a while, I asked him what the matter was, as he didn't seem to be his jolly self. He admitted that he had some challenges lately due to work pressure with waking up as early as he used to do.

So I asked him if he was willing to spend a few minutes with me to try and solve his energy issues.

As this was the first time i wanted to try this technique, I think I was more nervous than him, haha! So we sat down together and after i explained him what the exercise was, we jumped straight into it. It took us quite some time, as i wasn't convinced myself that it could work, and then, all of a sudden after 6 or 7 round of trying, I asked him " If you use your power move now, what do you feel?" I expected him to say " I don't feel any change", but surprisingly he said: " Wow, I feel so much more energized when I do my power move!". We both were so excited that it actually worked!

What is an anchor

In NLP we are using a technique that we call Anchoring. With anchoring you instill a certain state to a person that you both identified as the main issue, once the particular anchor is fired,it will automatically trigger that state.

Anchors can be created in several ways, there are people that prefer a specific 'pose', some people like to clench their fist and for others it works best if you anchor on their knuckles. Depending on your coach and preference, it can be fixed anywhere, however, a coach needs to be careful and keep the environment in check.

Also, the anchor should not be placed in an area that is commonly touched by anyone as there might be times you don't want to anchor to be triggered!

An effective anchor

In order for an anchor to be really effective and powerful it needs to consist of:

Intensity - The state that you want to anchor needs to be extremely intense for it to work;

Timing - The timing of placing the anchor is crucial for the success;

Unique - The anchor needs to be in a unique place or area that you usually don't access;

Replicable - You need to be able to do place the anchor several times, in the exact same way;

Number of times - The more times the anchor is placed, the deeper the neurological connection is.

I will leave you today with an exercise so you can try anchoring yourself. First you need to identify a feeling that you want to have changed e.g. lack of energy.

1. Think about a time that you were completely energized;

2. Once you have that memory in front of you, be in that moment completely. See what you saw at that time, hear what you heard an feel what you exactly felt;

3. Now that you really start to feel those feelings, try to increase the colors that you see or the sounds that you hear, once you feel that you are reaching that peak moment, clench your fist and say out loud and with energy : "Yes!". Break state.

4. Think of another time that you were completely energized and ready to take on the world;

5.Feel those feelings intensify, hear what you are saying, see how your body is getting energized;

6. When you are just before that peak again, clench your fist and say: "Yes!". Break state.

Depending on how well you are following the instructions, you might want to repeat the above 2 or 3 more times. Once you have done about 4-5 round, break your state. You could do a few jumping jacks or repeat the alphabet out loud in reverse. The point of breaking a state is that you get out of the current state. If the state is correctly broken, you can test the anchor now.

Did you feel the difference it made to you?
