New Year Resolutions: To do or not to do...

It's this time of the year again where we are all full of newly found energy and excitement. It is also the time where we leave another year behind us, 365 days of opportunities. I hope you have grabbed most of them and had a fantastic year. As with any other year, some of us had their best year ever while others went to dramatic hardships, lost jobs, lost family members to name a few.

No matter in which category you fall, or any other category in between for that matter, now is the time to start planning for greatness for 2020.

I am sure you have the 'usual' list of resolutions: exercise more, eat healthier, go to church more often etc. and I am also sure that the majority of you, my dear friends, after the 2 first weeks in January, have already broken the resolution or even worse, you gave up once again!

Let today be the first steps to really lasting change and achievement of the goals you desperately want to hit!

In a while I will give you some useful tips on how to create your goals, how to stay motivated and finally let you achieve all that you are planning for in 2020.

Setting yourself apart from your competition

One of the first things that pops up in my mind if I hear January 1, is the owners and operators of Fitness clubs. Regardless if you are operating a commercial gym, or perhaps you are in charge of a hotel facility, we all love to help others become healthy, more fit and more confident, at the same time we are selling them all the nice dreams they want to hear.

My question to you is, what will you do differently this year for those newly acquired members?

As a seasoned operator, we know that more than 70% of new joiners during this season will not make it through the first 3 months of the membership. This sounds like a great deal, they paid already and not using the facilities anymore. But what does this to your retention numbers? how likely are they to recommend their friends and family members? With the system that I will share with you in a moment, you can guarantee yourself of increased retention numbers and all the other benefits that go with it, such as increased member numbers and what to think of personal training packages!

By the way, in case you are reading this and you live in Macau, have a look at the Sheraton Grand Macao, they have some great offers, fantastic staff and a great community!

Who will benefit from this system?

As I spend all my career in the fitness industry, I just highlighted this industry where the system can be implemented, but it doesn't stop here!

This is system is extremely useful and has been created and used successfully by Tony Robbins for decades, so sure success is guaranteed!

The model that Tony used in the early days was based on 3 steps, and after using it myself, I have created a 4th step that I personally found very effective, to complement the amazing system from Tony.

Wheel of life

This step is my personal addition to the system and it will give you a clear view on where you are in life in 8 major, general areas:

1. Finance;

2. Personal Growth;

3. Health;

4. Family;

5. Relationships;

6. Social Life;

7. Attitude;

8. Career.

As an exercise, you can create your own wheel as per the image below.

How does it work:

For each segment of the wheel, you rate yourself on a scale from 1-10, with 1 being absolutely off track and 10 being extremely satisfied. In every segment you draw a small line on top of the score you rate yourself.

Once you have gone through the 8 segments, try to connect all the lines.

This will give you a great overview where you are at now, at the same time, you can use this format for example monthly to track your progress.

Know your outcome

We see it happening around us so often, and maybe you can see yourself in it as well, people working their butts off day in day, from to-do list to to-do list and yet, they don't seem to make any progress.

The most likely reason for this is that they don't have a clear outcome of what they want from the start!

It's not strange that Stephen Covey added this part in his book: The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People as well: "Begin with the end in mind."

All successful people in this world are absolutely clear on what they want to achieve, the moment they start planning their day, week, month and year, so why should you not take advantage of this as well!

If you are absolutely clear on what you want, and if you keep sight of it every single day, your subconscious mind will be programmed to find ways to get to what you want.

We tend to write down our goals for the year on a piece of paper, put it in our drawers and come December 31, 2020 we remember that we have put them there and realize we haven't achieved any of our goals!

Avoid falling in that trap by having multiple lists, in several; places where they are easy to be seen. Putting them on your mirror in the bath room can have a very positive impact.

More important besides writing the goals down, make sure you write them in such a way that you have already achieved them, this will trigger your subconscious mind once more, this way you can leave all the hard work to your subconscious mind to get things done.

How strong is your purpose?

In other words, how strong is your why? If you lack a very strong why or purpose, you are guaranteed to fail in any area of life that you want to focus on. Without purpose, your mind and your body will not move you towards what you want and just like anything else in your body, they will follow the road of least resistance. This means it will go on automatic pilot as there is no clear purpose or not a strong enough why to drive towards.

If we look a bit into the world of NLP, there are 2 ways for people to get motivated.

We are all driven either to avoid pain, in NLP terms away from, or we are driven to gain pleasure, in NLP we call this towards.

If you identify which type you or your clients are, you can now align both the purpose and outcome in such a way that you can easily tap into your subconscious mind and make the change happen.

Take...MASSIVE... Action!

Now that you are clear on what you want to achieve, how you can continuously motivate yourself it is time for the most important step of all.

Take MASSIVE action!

It's not just about taking that first step and then see how it goes, it's about full dedication and passion towards achieving your goals. It's about showing the world that inner beast that is longing to come out, about taking those life changing steps to greatness!

A quick recap on the 4 steps of the system:

1. Create your personal Wheel of Life;

2. Know your Outcome;

3. Have a strong Purpose;

4. Take MASSIVE Action.
